CRD is the front door of the CMS-recommended stack: it fires during ordering workflow, returns coverage requirements (PA needed? documentation rules? forms?), and can hand off to DTR for documentation gathering. Its value depends heavily on the payer's rules engine being accurate and current — a wrong "no auth required" answer is worse than no answer.
